Small gram negative coccobacilli
short, plump Gram negative rods/ coccobacilli, typically 1.0 - 1.5 by 1.5-2.5µm, often becoming coccoid and appearing as diplococci.
Colonies are normally smooth, sometimes mucoid, pale yellow to greyish white.
Some environmental strains may produce a diffusible brown pigment
